OIL COOLERS
Do you need one?
Oil coolers are used to maintain the temperature of the oil in a hydraulic elevator, the same way that the radiator maintains the temperature of the engine in your car. They’re often not necessary, but if the elevator usage is expected to be high, then they will help to keep the oil cool.
If the oil gets too hot in a hydraulic elevator, it can lead to several problems. From levelling issues to speed control and even motor failure. These can be both costly and dangerous.
To work properly, the cooler must remove the heat from the elevator machine room.
Oil coolers are usually vented outside or at least into another area separated from the machine room (such as a warehouse).
Oil Coolers must also be maintained:
- The radiator kept clean so it can transfer the heat efficiently.
- Some models have a filter that must be checked and periodically replaced.
- Hoses connecting it to the tank must be checked regularly.
- The thermostat on the oil cooler must be set so that it works in conjunction with the thermostat in the elevator machine room as much as possible.
If your hydraulic elevator is getting a lot of use and the tank is hot to the touch, an oil cooler can be added to help regulate the temperature.
At left and right are photos taken at a job in Toronto, installed by another company. The oil cooler isn’t vented anywhere, so it is just heating the machine room. Hoses and cables should always be protected from sharp edges, but these are not protected.
Non-Proprietary Equipment
Some lift and elevator repair companies use parts or computer software that are proprietary to them, meaning they are the only company capable of working on them when a repair is needed. We use non-proprietary parts and equipment, allowing you the choice of a future repair company.
